Apprenticeship

Learning Through Immersion

Apprenticeship at Vanamu is a long-term commitment to practice.

It is for those who wish to move beyond introduction and assistance — into responsibility, repetition, and refinement.

Apprentices work closely with masters and the Vanamu team on live projects involving:

  • Natural building systems
  • Structural earth and lime techniques
  • Urban permaculture and food systems
  • Water and sanitation micro-solutions
  • Regenerative land and ecological design

Learning happens through doing — daily, consistently, and with attention.

What Apprenticeship Involves

  • Sustained engagement on site
  • Working alongside experienced craftspeople
  • Real-time problem solving
  • Understanding sequencing and decision-making
  • Documentation and reflection
  • Taking responsibility for specific components over time

Mistakes are part of the process.
The skill lies in recognizing and correcting them.

Apprenticeship builds judgment — not just technique.

Who Apprenticeship Is For

Apprenticeship is suited for:

  • Individuals committed to natural building and ecological systems
  • Designers seeking embodied understanding
  • Craftspeople expanding their material knowledge
  • Those interested in regenerative practice as a life path

It requires:

  • Commitment of time
  • Physical readiness
  • Emotional maturity
  • Willingness to receive correction
  • Humility and responsibility

This is not a short-term program.
It is a gradual deepening.

Duration

Apprenticeship durations vary depending on mutual alignment and project cycles.

We encourage initial volunteering or workshop participation before entering an apprenticeship.

Our previous apprentice stories document engagements over a minimum of 3 months.

Engagement evolves through trust.

What Apprentices Gain

  • Technical depth
  • Material sensitivity
  • Systems thinking through practice
  • Confidence rooted in lived experience
  • Integration into a working community

Apprenticeship is not certification.
It is transmission.

Application

Apprenticeship begins with dialogue.

If you feel aligned, write to us describing:

  • Your background
  • Your intention
  • Your availability
  • Why you seek apprenticeship

We respond carefully and selectively.

Apprenticeship strengthens the roots of Vanamu’s learning ecosystem — and prepares the next generation to carry it forward.
